Erlangs and IP Bandwidth Calculator

Print this Topic Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The Erlangs and IP Bandwidth Calculator calculates the bandwidth that should be provided through an IP-based network to transport a known traffic volume in Erlangs.  Reverse calculations are also possible to calculate the busy hour traffic in Erlangs that can be offered to a group of lines derived from an IP link of a known bandwidth.

There are actually two steps in each calculation, although the calculator merges these steps.   Firstly, the Erlang B traffic model is used to calculate the number of lines required for a given busy hour traffic figure.  Then, this is converted to a bandwidth figure using an identical process to the Lines and IP Bandwidth Calculator.
