interact with asterisk from application

Hi all,
I was wondering what should I use to develop a semi soft phone that interact with an asterisk PBX, in other word the application need to function just like a soft phone,

what are the tools I might need, to accomplish that ,
I am welling to learn what ever is possible to develop a soft phone
