I am newbie and would like to setup VoIP. I am wondering what I need to get it started.

Hello,
This depends on what type of application you want to test. You can setup a simple test with many of the availible software products out there (netmeeting, openphone) Hardware will most likely yield a better result though. Let me know if you have any more questions.
