Outgoing Calls

    Just jumping into VoIP for a school project. How are outgoing calls to a PSTN handled? I’m assuming the call goes from the phone, to a gateway, to the PSTN (therefore if its long distance charges are incurred)?? An internal call over a WAN link never sees the PSTN? What kind of device determines if the call needs to go over the PSTN or over pure IP?

    i think THE GATEWAY does the translation between th ip network
    and SS7 protocol which is the circuit switch or PSTN.
