Wireless data transfer between Optical Modules

Hello Friends! Just need to discuss that whether we can replace optical fiber connected between two Line Ports with some wireless transmission technology;atleast at POP sites. As at POP location ,distance is very small between two nodes.So with help of some optical signal to wireless signal generator we can establish communication between two Line ports.We can use IP kind of format to address two different ports and configure it through software on modules between the ports. I need you to share your ideas and pros and cons of it. Thanks in advance!!!
