Increased Data Traffic Vs. Dropped Calls

    Hi,

    Is increased data traffic causes increased dropped calls?
    We have issues in our network and management is saying the increased dropped calls have been attributed to increased DATA TRAFFIC.

    Maybe you can share some reports or readings to shed light on this issue.

    You know this is very difficult to conclude.

    A possible explanation may be:

    With increase in Data traffic,there will be more subs with no DL power control which will increase the overall interference of the cell.

    Will modifying the GPRS Power Control parameter helps?
    I want to modify ALPHA and GAMMA.
    Alpha we have is at 6. GAMMA is at 30.
    I want to modify GAMMA first to 20.
    If it will not solve, I will try GAMMA=30 and ALPHA=10.
    Anyone who jas experience modifying these paramaters?

    hi juan,

    it could be useful to say that you are talking about 2G 🙂

    In 2G it is simple : more traffic = more timeslots used = more frequency usage = more interference = worse BER = Dropped calls.

    To reduce interference due to load:
    1/ first look at the ratio of HO QUALITY UL and HO QUALITY UL. Which one is worst : DL or UL ?

    then,
    – reduce average power by reducing power control thresholds (for TCH)
    – increase half rate usage (to reduce timeslot usage)
    – GPRS power control works only in UL (Alpha & Gamma parameters). You can try Gamma = 32 and alpha = 0.8 (or “80”), which will have a little more effect than your settings.

    There are other features to reduce interference in a network, but they require much more work:
    – downtilt
    – re-azimuth
    – new frequency planning or new hopping strategy
    – synchronized network

    Hi Pix,

    Thanks for the reply.
    HO DL Quality 1s at 10% and 7% for HO UL Quality.
    Huawei did a trial on reducing GPRS Traffic and their TCH Drops decerased.I did the same for Ericssson but effect is not that high.
    I modified the ODPDCHLIMIT parameter.

    hi,
    the ODPDCH won’t have much effect in E/// network, because it is set to a very high value by default (100%).

    try modifying the parameter that allows to pack more TBF onto the same PDCH (one parameter for UL, another one for DL). By default it is 2 ! Try 4 or 5. That will strongly reduce your GPRS Load !! It will also reduce the GPRS throughput, but – due to the bursty behaviour of data traffic – I think it is acceptable.

    Hi Pix,

    That is the TBFDLLIMIT and TBFULLIMIT right?
    Before this is only BSC Level but now there’s a market adaptation that makes it cell level.
    By the way, if we already have cell level, which will it follow? Is it the BSC Level parameter or the cell level parameter?

    At present here are ur values.
    BSC Level: TBFDLLIMIT=70
    TBFULLIMIT=50
    Cell Level: TBFDLLIMIT=20
    TBFULLIMIT=20.

    In Huawei, No of TBF/PDCH parameter is PDCHUPLEV for UL and PDCHDWNLEV
    for DL.

    Is the PDCHDWNLEV in Huawei both for EDGE and GPRS? Meaning if Huawei set this to 160, it can squeeze 16 users in 1 TBF regardless if this is EDGE or GPRS?

    Also Ericsson has TBFDLLIMIT maximum of 100 only meaning this can squeeze 10 users per TBF only right?

    Wondering this because Huawei has 160 as maximum so they can squeeze more users in 1 TBF then in Ericsson.

    Please advise if I understand it right.

    jun,

    the max TBF per PDCH is (about) 10 in DL and 6 in UL, that’s a 3GPP constraint.

    I’m suprised that in E/// there are 2 parameters that can control the same thing.

    If you are saying that the cell parameter is a market adaptation, and since you are having it available, then I’d say the cell parameter is the one commanding TBF/PDCH pilling.

    So at cell level, try value 30 DL and 30 UL (and then increase gradually by steps of 05), you should see an effect rather quickly on both GPRS occupancy (positively) and GPRS throughput (negatively).

    Yes for both and recommended setting is 80 for DL and 70 for UL.
