Excel month names

    I need to be able to check each row in a spreadsheet that a date is entered into and check which month it is checked again a cell with at month number entered e.g. 6 for June etc. Does any one know how this can be done. I tried to use the Month formula but it does not seem to work on a range of cells, this is in Excel 97.

    U r right. month formula doesn’t work.
    Actually, I need the excel sheet.
    So that I can provide the solution.

    Hi Ian,
    if date is enterered in column A then:
    =CHOOSE(MONTH(A1),”JAN”,”FEB”,”MAR”,”APR”,”MAY”,”JUN”,”JUL”,”AUG”,”SEP”,”OCT”,”NOV”,”DEC”)

    Hi Uppchunk,

    Well your formula is good but not exactly what I was looking for. I need a formula that would look at the range of A:A and pick out each row that has say month 6(jun out and then do a sumif depending on another formula result.
